OUR STORY

A story of faith, students and generations discovering the Bible together.

GENERATIONS CHANGED

SCFSU Jamaica brings together two movements:
Scripture Union (SU) and the Inter-School Christian Fellowship (ISCF).
From the beginning, our purpose has been simple: To Know Christ and Make Him Known.

Our story goes back to 1868 when Josiah Spiers sat on a beach in Wales and shared Bible stories with children. That small moment grew into the Children’s Special Service Mission (CSSM), now known worldwide as Scripture Union.

In Jamaica, this vision took root in the late 1800s. Early leaders like Rev. H. Seymour Isaacs and Mr. W. F. M. Copeland helped start Bible reading circles, Sunday schools and holiday camps for children.

By the 1940s, new people stepped in to grow the work. Miss Helen Cassidy asked Mrs. Laurice Bird to lead local SU activities. Together with Rev. J. Calvert Cariss and a dedicated team, they formed Jamaica’s first official Scripture Union Island Committee in 1954. From small beach groups to organized camps and school Bible clubs, the movement began to reach more and more young people.

As students grew older, they wanted to keep meeting. This led to the birth of the Inter-School Christian Fellowship (ISCF). High school students and university students now had their own space to gather, study the Bible and grow in faith together. The ISCF family is part of IFES, the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students.

Today, we call it SCFSU Jamaica — one family, one mission. Through school clubs, holiday camps, Bible study groups and leadership training, we help students discover the Bible for themselves and share it with others.

What started with one man on a beach has become a story that touches thousands across Jamaica. Generations have grown in faith, found hope and become leaders who serve their schools, churches and communities.

You can be part of this story too.
Pray for us. Join a club. Support a camp. Help the next generation know Christ and make Him known.
